ENTERING THE NEW ERA OF OT
Join us on the next chapter of our journey as we introduce Occupational Therapy to our service delivery alongside psychology and positive behaviour support. Meet the newest member of our team, Lewis, as he delves into his world of becoming an OT and the significance of supporting the community on their journey to improved functional independence.
“HEY I’M LEWIS, THE GRAY AREA’S OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST!”
As a passionate occupational therapist, I'm excited to share my journey and introduce you to the fascinating world of OT.
My path to becoming an occupational therapist was unexpected. In Year 12, a careers advisor suggested I attend an information session at the University of Newcastle. Curious and unsure about my future, I decided to give it a shot. Little did I know that this decision would shape my entire career.
WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
So, what exactly is occupational therapy? It's a question I often hear, and one I asked myself back in high school. Put simply, Occupational Therapy is about helping people participate in the activities that make up their daily lives.
Think about your typical day. From the moment you wake up to when you go to bed, you engage in numerous tasks or "occupations." These include everything from personal care routines to work responsibilities, leisure activities, and caring for loved ones. As occupational therapists, we support individuals in improving their participation in these daily occupations. The core of our profession lies in understanding what's meaningful to you and your family. We assess each person's unique strengths and challenges to foster growth and development through the most important aspects of their day.
THERAPY FOR THE YOUNGER AGES TO EMPOWER FUTURE STAGES
When working with children, I believe in harnessing their strengths, interests, and unique abilities to help them tackle challenges. By creating an environment of fun, connection, and meaning, we can help kids reveal their true capabilities and potential.
