CASE STUDY 1

SUPPORTING THOSE THROUGH THICK AND THIN- WHATEVER AGE.

Alan, a 40-year-old man, had always been independent and driven. However, for the past year, he had been experiencing sudden and overwhelming panic attacks. These episodes left him feeling dizzy, short of breath, and as though something terrible was about to happen. The unpredictability of the attacks made him avoid social situations, leading to feelings of isolation. Alan worried that his anxiety would begin to affect his work and relationships.

Exposure and Response Prevention

Gradual exposure was a key element in Alan’s therapy, helping him confront his fears in a controlled and supportive environment. This included:

  • Practicing slow breathing and grounding exercises in safe settings

  • Introducing mild physical sensations (such as light exercise) to build tolerance to bodily changes

  • Progressively engaging in avoided situations, such as attending social gatherings in small steps, helping to reaffirm his safety and tolerance of such events.

Cognitive-Behavioural Intervention
Alan’s psychologist used cognitive-behavioural strategies to help him understand his panic attacks and regain a sense of control. Therapy focused on:

  • Identifying and challenging catastrophic thoughts

  • Learning to recognise early signs of anxiety

  • Developing coping strategies to manage symptoms before they escalated

Relaxation and Self-Regulation

Alan was introduced to a personalised toolkit of strategies to regulate his nervous system, including:

  • Progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery

  • Sensory-based grounding techniques

  • Establishing a structured daily routine to reduce anticipatory anxiety

How TGA help Alan: Achieving Confidence and Independence

In just a few sessions, Alan noticed a significant improvement in his ability to manage panic symptoms. With the right strategies in place, he began to attend social events again, take on new challenges at work, and feel confident in his ability to handle anxiety. His therapy provided him with lifelong tools to navigate stress, reinforcing his resilience and independence.
